Backpack Essentials - Watches : necessity, not just accessory
When you travel out of a backpack, downsizing your life to the bare essentials is crucial. Over the years I have spoken with people from all over the world about what they carry in their packs. Of course the basics like clothing, footwear, cosmetics and toiletries are mentioned across the board, but what I’m more interested in is what luxuries do you consider essential, which unique items can you not live without while on the road?
Perhaps it’s a guitar, or a travel sized blow dryer. I’ve seen girls pack a different bikini for each day of the month, and I once met a guy that had different sets of headphones for listening to different styles of music. What is essential to one may seem superfluous to another. Personally, I like to have a selection of watches on hand.
To me watches are not an accessory, but a necessity. Whether its my Suuno scuba diving computer, or my brass Ventus adventure watch, each serves a purpose and is worn for a different reason. And although these watches serve a practical use, they are also on display so its important that they look and feel good. Which is why recently I added a new watch to my mobile collection, the Frankie in Koa and Ash from Jord Watches.
Constructed from gorgeous Koa wood that grows exclusively in Hawaii, this hand crafted wooden watch is a clean and simple piece without all kinds of dials and buttons. It can easily be dressed up for a night on the town, or dressed down for a day at the beach. The contrast between the light wood, the texture of the wood grains and the grey face with black markings make it a very sleek and understated piece. One of my favorite aspects about this watch thanks to the all wooden construction is how incredibly light it is, which makes it a welcomed addition to my pack.
For the majority of people who don’t live out of backpacks, its not space and weight concerns that keep them from having a few watches to choose from, it’s cost. Luckily the guys over at Jord Watches have made their collections attractive as well as affordable, so you don’t have to forfeit your Christmas vacation to have a new wooden watch in your collection.
Right now I’m back home in Canada enjoying the beautiful fall weather before my next adventure in Mexico begins on Monday. Bags are packed and I’m off to the airport in the morning, and you can be sure I’m taking my Jord watch with me to the beach.
